Birldland Park & Gardens

Origins & Vision

  • Founded in 1957 by bird enthusiast Leonard W. Hill, nicknamed the “Penguin Millionaire”, Birdland began in the grounds of a Tudor manor called Chardwar, before relocating to its current site in 1989, spanning approximately 7–9 acres of gardens, woodland, and the River Windrush.

  • The present location was formerly a trout farm and a poplar plantation owned by Bryant & May for matchstick production; today, over 150 mature trees still form a lush canopy over the park

Conservation & Education

  • Birdland plays an active role in conservation and education, participating in international breeding programs, supporting research projects for hornbills, penguins, and rainforests, in partnership with European and global organisations.

  • Educational offerings include feeding talks, keeper encounters, school visits, and themed events with no extra charge

Wildlife & Exhibits

  • Home to over 500 birds across 150+ open aviaries, Birdland houses rare species like England's only breeding group of King Penguins, along with flamingos, pelicans, cranes, storks, cassowaries, golden conures, and more.

  • Specialized habitats include:

    • Desert House for arid-region birds like carmine bee-eaters,

    • Discovery Zone (formerly Tropical House) featuring themed zones on “What is a Bird?” and “The Egg Connection” with soft play and educational sessions.

    • Marshmouth Nature Reserve (2.5 acres) includes ponds and meadows, supporting local wildlife, kingfishers, otters, grass snakes, frogs, birds, and hundreds of plant and insect species, viewed from discreet hides as well as an immersive Jurassic Journey with life-size dinosaurs among the trees.

Visitor Amenities & Accessibility

  • Facilities include: The Nest Kitchen & Café, play areas, picnic spots, gift shop, and fully wheelchair-accessible routes, including Changing Places toilets.

  • Regular penguin feeding displays delight families; dogs on leads are welcome at Birdland—an inclusive, welcoming destination for all.
